■ pressure

除了最常见作为名词之外，pressure 也可以作为及物动词。pressure somebody to inf. 是“对某人施加压力，要他如何如何”，但是他究竟是否听从，并不明确交代。

• Congress is pressuring the President to accept a compromise.国会在对总统施压，要他接受一项妥协方案。

2007 年 12 月 21 日 Politico 报上一则新闻，说美国民主党的领导人受到党内压力，要改变在伊拉克战争问题上的方针（但尚未实际改变），标题是：Dem Leaders Pressured To Alter War Strategy，这里的 to inf. 也是尚未实现的。

• With Olmert pressed to quit, government may fall apart.(JTA, Headline, Jan. 17, 2008)由于（总理）奥尔默特受到辞职压力，（以色列）政府可能垮台。
• A foundation that has sued the military alleging widespread violations of religious freedom said Tuesday that it has evidence showing that soldiers are pressured to adopt fundamentalist Christian beliefs.一个基金会起诉军方，声称军方大举违反宗教自由，它星期二说，它有证据表明，士兵们受到压力，要他们采纳原教旨主义的基督教信仰。

但是，后面如果是 into + -ing，则是压力奏效。

• He was pressured into withdrawing from the competition.他受到压力，不得不退出了竞争。
• US officials pressured the Iraqi government into suspending the bus convoys because they are concerned that Baghdad has not made sufficient preparations should a larger number of refugees decide to return. (US News & World Report, Jan. 14, 2008, p.31)美国官员迫使伊拉克政府停止了用大轿车接回难民的做法，因为他们担心，万一更多的难民决定返国，巴格达还没有做好充分的准备。

不过，不能一概而论，以为凡是 to inf. 就是结果未明。有些前面的动词，“役使”的意义十分强烈，后面的 to inf. 就通常是实现了的，例如

• force somebody to inf.
• persuade somebody to inf.
• order somebody to inf.

此外，也可以从动词 pressure 的时态看出压力是否奏效。用进行时或是用被动的一般现在时，可以肯定是尚未奏效。用一般过去时或是现在或过去完成时，可能已经奏效，也可能只有压力，但尚未奏效。
