1) 一般认为：may 是得到允许去做某事，can 是自己有能力去做某事。

• He can swim the channel.他能游过海峡。
• Children may swim in the pool only when there is a life-saver present.唯有救生员在场，儿童方可以到游泳池里游泳。

但是在实际用途中，can 往往侵犯 may 的使用领域。

• You can go when I dismiss the class, but no sooner.等到我宣布下课，你就可以走，但未下课不能走。

有时候这会造成歧义。

• You can walk to the theatre.你能够走得到剧院。或：允许你走到剧院。需要从上下文来判别。

2) 如果某人客气地询问：May I use the telephone? 回答时最好不说：Yes, you may. 这样说有点高高在上恩准别人的口气（人家用 may 是自谦，回答时如果把人家的自谦原封接过来就成了自傲了）。最好说：Yes, of course you can.

3) 如果对客观可能性进行推测，肯定句只能用 may, might, could，不能用 can（见 can 3)）。

4) 对客观可能性进行推测，否定时可以用 may 或 can，但是 may 与 can 否定时意义不同，may not 是“可能不”，cannot 是“不可能”。

• She may not be at home.她可能不在家。
• She cannot be at home.她不可能在家。

5) 自己说别人可以做什么事情（也就是宣布允许如何如何），可以用 may 或 can。但是如果是客观叙述某人已经得到允许可以如何如何，就不能用 may（叙述过去也不能用 might），要用 can 或 be allowed to。

• These days, children can/are allowed to (*may) do what they like.现在这些日子，孩子爱干什么就可以干什么。
• I could/was allowed to (*might) read what I liked when I was a child.我小时候爱什么书就可以看什么书。
• Can/Are you allowed to (*May you) park on both sides of the road here?这条路两边都可以停车吗？

但是如果间接转述别人宣布允许如何如何，可以用 may。

• The manager says that we may leave our coats in the downstairs toilet.经理说我们可把外套放在楼下的更衣室里。
