1) want 除了一般都知道的“想要什么”和“想做某事”的意义之外，还可以有“（非自己本意的）需要某物或需要做什么”的意思（甚至主语可以不是人）。

• You'll want your umbrella.你会需要雨伞的。
• You want a number 65 bus.你要乘 65 路公共汽车。
• He will want to see a doctor.他将需要看医生。
• The garage wants a coat of paint.车库需要粉刷一层。
• The boy wants a good thrashing.这个男孩欠一顿打。

2) want 的直接宾语后面可以有个简单的副词或动词过去分词作为宾补语，译成中文这个宾补语往往要译成为主动或被动的动词。

• Do you want him back?你想要他回来吗？
• Card wanted Rummy out. (Newsweek, Oct. 9, 2006, p.38)卡尔德希望卢米辞职。
• I didn't want you involved.我不想把你也扯进去。
• We want the brand in user's presence 24/7.我们想让商标每星期七天每天二十四小时都能同用户见面。
• There are people we are still concerned about and people (=terrorists) we want arrested and questions we need answered. (The Washington Post, Aug. 12, 2006)还有一些人我们不放心，有一些人我们希望能够抓住，有一些问题我们需要答案。
• They want animal suffering kept to a minimum.他们想把动物的痛苦减到最低限度。
• Israel wants the Islamic militant group Hezbollah disarmed.以色列想把伊斯兰战斗集团真主党解除武装。
• There are a few more oils the painter wants hung.还有一些油画是画家想挂起来的。
• Supporters of creationism want it taught in schools alongside evolutionism.支持创世说的人们希望创世说能同进化论一起列入学校课程。
• But what the voters want done about the economy?(Michael Barone. US News & World Report, April 21, 2008, p.51)但是选民们希望对经济采取什么办法呢？

want 的直接宾语还可以充当“兼语”，即后面一个动词不定式的主语。

• What do you want me to do?你要我做些什么？

后面也可以不用动词不定式而用动词现在分词，此时就加强了后面动词的延续意义。

• He wants you waiting for him in his office when he gets there.他要你在他回到他办公室时就在等着他（如果 waiting 改为 to wait，就减弱了“他回到他办公室之前你就应该提前先到”的语气，而且 wait 这个延续时段应该把 he gets there 这个瞬时时间点包含在内，用 to wait 不大自然）。

没有直接宾语，want 作为不及物动词，后面也可以加上副词 in 或 out，省略动词 come 或 go。这个用法，原先流行于美国的中西部，但现在已经扩大到全国。
