1) 作为名词（“尊敬”、“尊重”），很容易理解和使用，没有多少要说明的问题。只有一点：单数 respect 是“尊敬的心情”，如果说“敬意的表示”要用复数 respects。

• Give my respects (*respect) to your parents.请代我向令尊令堂问安。

2) 但是作为名词，除了“尊敬”、“敬意”之外，还有一个大不相同的词义（“方面”、“领域”），用在 in this respect, in ... respects, with respect to 或商业上的 in respect of 之类的词组中，意思都是“至于”、“在…方面”。

• Parents often have little choice with respect to the way their child is medically treated.对于孩子如何治疗，父母往往没有多少好选择的。

3) 不过，with respect 后面没有 to...，仍然保留“尊敬”的意思，往往用来先表示礼貌，然后向对方表示异议。

• But Mr. Jones, with respect, I cannot accept your argument.不过，琼斯先生，我很尊敬您，但是我不能接受您的论据。

如果是对第三者表示异议，with respect 后面就要加 to...，但这一来，成了 with respect to，同不表示尊敬的“至于”的 with respect to 雷同了。所以，通常要在 respect 前面加上一个或两个定语，以示区别。

• With the utmost respect to the author, the report doesn't show such thing.我十分尊敬报告的作者，但是报告并没有显示出这样的内容。
• With all respect to Mr. Russell, I doubt whether molecular physics and the Einstein theory are relevant to the question.尽管我十分尊敬罗素先生，但是我仍然怀疑，究竟分子物理学和爱因斯坦相对论是否同这个问题有关。

有时候 respect 后面没有 to...，前面也加定语。

• With all due respect, your plan wouldn't work.恕我直言，您的方案是行不通的。
