中文“给某人一个电话”中的“电话”，不是 telephone 或 phone，而是 phone call。此外，同中文一样，英文的 telephone 或 phone，还可以缩小意义为电话的话筒。所以，“拿起电话”（其实不是把整个电话机都拿起来，只是拿起话筒）在英文可以是 pick up the receiver，也可以是 pick up/ lift the telephone/phone。放开手，用肩头和半边脸夹住话筒，这个“话筒”也可以是 telephone 或 phone。

• He kept the phone nestled in the crook of his neck and shoulder.他把电话（电话筒）夹在自己脖子和肩头之间的空弯里面。
• He held the telephone against his sweating cheek.他把电话机（电话筒）夹着紧贴自己冒汗的脸颊。

“放下电话”（其实是“放下听筒”）在英文可以是 put down/ replace the receiver，也可以是 put down/ replace the telephone/phone（类似的说法还有 nestle/ place the receiver back in its cradle 或 put/ nestle the telephone back in its cradle 或 return the phone to the cradle）。

但是，上述的例子，都是电话机正常使用时可以以 telephone 或 phone 代替 receiver。如果涉及对话筒加以非正常使用的动作或场合，就还是不要用 telephone 而用 receiver。

• In a fury, he slammed down the receiver (*the telephone).他一怒之下，把话筒摔了下去。

手机是 cell phone，不叫 telephone，但是也可以同 telephone 一样简化为 phone。由于它机身和听筒合而为一，所以对它施加的动作，也以整个手机为对象。

• flip the phone shut/closed关起手机。
