■ floor 与 storey

两者都是指“楼层”，一般可以互用（storey 美国英语作 story）。不过，说具体单数建筑物内部的第几层，用 floor 比用 storey 多些，例如 on the fifth floor。说楼层的数量或复数的几层楼（尤其是从建筑物外部的角度来说），则较多用 storey。

• twenty stories above the noise of the garbage trucks that rolled through Manhattan streets every morning before dawn有二十层楼那样高，远远高踞那些每天黎明前隆隆驶过曼哈顿马路的垃圾车之上。

但这并不是绝对的，也可以说 the upper floors of the building 和 a multi-floor building。另外，楼层的编号，英美有差别。美国的排法同中国相同，楼下是一楼 (first floor)，上一层是二楼 (second floor)，如此类推。英国则楼下是 ground floor，上一层（即中国和美国的二楼）是一楼 (first floor)，再上一层是二楼，如此类推，总之，比美国和中国少算一层。
