■ out West

人在东部（尤其是在美国），谈到西部时，由于距离比较远，总有点遥远的感觉，常常就说 out West（作为地点状语）。

• People in the East simply have no understanding how difficult the water problems are out West.住在东部的人，简直不能体会西部的水源问题是多么的困难。
• Between 1990 and 2000, all five of the fastest-growing states were out West: Nevada (66 percent), Arizona (40 percent), Colorado (31 percent), Utah (30 percent), and Idaho (29 percent). (US News & World Report, Oct. 2, 2006, p.49)自 1990 年至 2000 年间，人口增加最快的五个州，全都在西部：内华达（百分之六十六）、亚利桑那（百分之四十）、科罗拉多（百分之三十一）、犹他（百分之三十）、爱达荷（百分之二十九）。

人在西部，谈到东部时，也常说 out East。

• If you are out East on the Island (= Long Island) and like wine, there are many excellent vineyards to visit with tasting at most of them.你如果住在东部的长岛，又喜欢葡萄酒，那么，可以有许多极好的葡萄园供你观光，而且大都可以品尝。

至于南北，则较少用 out South 或 out North，而较多按照地图上的上下位置，说 up North 与 down South。

• Although most of the alpine activities are out west or up north, a ski area 25 minutes from town is a resource that we are lucky to have.尽管登山运动大都在西部和北部，但是我们很幸运拥有的一个资源，就是有一处滑雪区，离城才二十五分钟的路程。

英国人较少说 out West 或者 out East，但也一样说 up North 与 down South（人在此地也这样说）。
