1) news 虽然是复数形式，其实是个不可数名词。如果要一件一件的说，要说 a piece of news, a bit of news 或 an item of news。但是对于已知的一个消息，就不必说 the piece of news，直接说 the news 就可以了。甚至某个特定的消息，不但可以用 the 来确指，而且还可以加上其他定语。

• For the White House, Zarqawi's unexpected demise is the first good news about the insurgency in months...(Newsweek, June 19, 2006, p.37)对于白宫来说，扎卡维的出人意料的死亡，是多个月来有关反叛动乱的第一个好消息…

（不说 the first piece of good news）但是要注意，只有是已知的消息或是独一无二的一个消息（有 the）才可以省去 piece of；如果是新提到的消息，由于必须有 a，就只能用 a piece of 来搭配 (a piece of good news)。

2) 第一次提到有好消息或者坏消息，也不说 a piece of good news 或 a piece of bad news，而是可以干脆当作已经知道有好消息或有坏消息，说 The good news is that...或 The bad news is that...

• The good news is that our ability to treat GI disorders continues to improve.幸好，我们治疗胃肠道疾病的能力继续在改善。

这样的思维方式扩而充之，不但好坏 news，而且谈论内容中别的判别成分，也可以当作已经分好了类别的、本来就应有的，第一次提及也用定冠词 the 而不用不定冠词 a。
