[Phr. coined by C. Wright Mills (1916–62), American political sociologist.]
The name of a movement originated by young radicals opposed to the philosophy of the ‘old’ liberal society; now applied to many movements of protest. Also attrib. Hence New Lefter, New Lefty, a supporter of radical policies; New Leftish a., New Leftist a. and n.
