[Sp. medriñaque, ‘Philippine stuff for stiffening women's skirts; short skirt’ (Cuyás Appleton's Sp.–Eng. Dict., N.Y., 1903); of obscure origin.
The Sp. word occurs in A. de Morga Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas (1609) in the forms medrinaque (p. 136) and mendriñaque (p. 138). It appears not to be, as might be supposed, a Tagal word, for in Santos' Vocab. Tagalo 1794 it is given as Spanish with various Tagal renderings. (Cf. medrinacks.)]
