‖ Invertebrata, n. pl.|ɪnvɜːtɪˈbreɪtə|
[mod.L., = animālia invertebrāta, corresp. to F. animaux invertébrés, invertebrate animals: see invertebrate.]
A name given to all animals except the Vertebrata or back-boned animals; originally introduced as correlative with the latter term, but now recognized as containing numerous sub-kingdoms, as distinct from each other as from the Vertebrata, and therefore retained only as a convenient negative term compehending all groups below the Vertebrata.
