[a. G. idryl (C. Bödeker 1844, in Ann. d. Chem. u. Pharm. LII. 102), f. idrialin 2 + -yl.]
a. A mixture of fluoranthene and other hydrocarbons (see quot. 1952) orig. obtained from the mercury ores of Idrija, in north-west Yugoslavia, and thought to be a single compound.
b. = fluoranthene.
1845C. Bödeker in Chem. Gaz. 15 Feb. 73 One of the products obtained in the working of the bituminous mercurial ores in Idria is the so-called Stupp, a soft black mass mixed with globules of mercury. It was supposed to contain idrialine, but in its stead another hydrocarbon was found, idryle C3H, and a more accurate examination has proved that idrialine..is an oxide of idryle. 1866H. Watts tr. Gmelin's Hand-bk. Chem. XVII. 477 Idryl. C42H14... The crystals are nearly colourless, with a tinge of yellowish-green... Idryl assumes a golden-yellow colour in cold oil of vitriol. 1877Chem. News 16 Nov. 222/2 G. Goldschmidt, ‘Idryl’. This body, found by Bödeker in Idria, is ascertained to consist of several hydrocarbons... Besides chrysen, pyren, anthracen, phenanthren, a new hydrocarbon, C15H10, was isolated, and receives the name originally applied to the mixture. 1892Roscoe & Schorlemmer Treat. Chem. (new ed.) III. vi. 523 Fluoranthene, C15H10, is found in coal-tar, and is also identical with idryl, one of the constituents of ‘stuppfett’. 1926H. G. Rule tr. Schmidt's Text-bk. Org. Chem. ii. xvii. 513 Fluoranthene or Idryl, m.p. 110°, b.p. 250° (at 60 mm.). 1952Chem. Rev. L. 483 In 1844 Boedeker..distilled these ores, with production of a similar hydrocarbon which he named idryl. Much later Goldschmiedt..showed..that idryl consisted of anthracene, phenanthrene, chrysene, pyrene, and a hitherto unknown hydrocarbon, C15H10, to which he gave the name idryl. Simultaneously with Goldschmiedt's discovery, Fittig and Gebhard..isolated..a hydrocarbon which was named fluoranthene and was claimed to be identical with Goldschmiedt's idryl. |
