1) 整数再加半，例如三个半月，可以说 three months and a half，也可以说 three and a half months。有一种说法，认为不可以说 three months and a half，只可以说 three and a half months，但是实际语言中似乎没有这样的禁忌。

• three pounds and a half of butter三磅半的黄油
• It is more than three centuries and a half since Ferdinand Magellan observed that the moon, during a solar eclipse, was not perfectly opaque.麦哲伦早在三个半世纪之前就已经观察到，在一次日食中，月球并不是完全晦暗的。

如果前面的整数是一，则 half 放在名词前时这个“一”用 one 来表达（名词用复数，整个数量在句中作复数处理）。

• One and a half years have passed since we last met.我们上次见面，已经过了一年半了。

half 放在名词后时这个“一”用 a 来表达（名词用单数，整个数量在句中作单数处理）。

• A year and a half has passed since we last met.我们上次会面，已经过了一年半了。
• Even an ocean and a half away, you are with me always.尽管相隔一个半大洋，你总是与我同在。

但是偶尔也有不用 a 而用 one 的。

• one year and a half一年半。

甚至有在 half 前不用 a 而用 one 的。

• three and one half centuries三个半世纪

2) half of + 名词成分，of 可以略去。如果名词是不可数的，整个 half 词组当作单数处理。如果名词是复数可数的，整个 half 词组当作复数处理。

• Half (of) the money has been spent.钱已经花掉了一半。
• At least half (of) her remarks were uncalled for.她提的意见起码有一半是不必要的。

不但 half，而且凡是表示几分之一的名词成分，它接上后面的另一个名词成分时，当中都可以不加 of。

• a quarter (of) the time otherwise needed本来所需时间的四分之一
• one fifth (of) the money paid所付金额的五分之一。

倍数一律不加 of。

• three times (*of) what is necessary所需的三倍。

但是如果是百分比，of 则不可以省略：

• twenty percent of the original amount原先数量的百分之二十

3) 可以说 a half + 可数名词单数或 half a + 可数名词单数。

• a half hour 或是 half an hour，a half loaf 或是 half a loaf。

前者更好些，但是不能说 *a half of a loaf。

4) 把一件东西一切两半，按照逻辑，本来应该说 cut something in halves，但是实际语言中通常却说 cut something in half。

5) 把一个数量减去一半（剩下一半），是 to reduce by half。
