A bitter emetic principle found in the common violet.
1831J. Davies Man. Mat. Med. 338 An alkaloid principle, nearly related to emetine, discovered by M. Boulay, who has called it Violine. 1861Bentley Man. Bot. 458 The emetic property is due to a peculiar alkaloid named violine, which greatly resembles, if it be not identical with, emetine. 1887Buck's Handbk. Med. Sci. V. 490/2 Viola odorata contains a gastric irritant called violin.
