1) 作为名词，on the verge of 是“濒于…边沿”。

• My uncle was on the verge of economic ruin.我的伯父当时濒于经济崩溃的边沿。
• We were on the verge of starting without him when he arrived.我们正快要不等他就动手的时候，他来到了。

2) 作为不及物动词，verge on 后面可以跟着：

意思都是“几乎是”、“近乎”，同 border on 差不多，意义多半是负面的。

• Her queer actions verge on madness.她的古怪行为，像是发了疯。
• Their statements often verge on nonsense.他们的言论，往往同胡言乱语差不了多少。
• His remarks verged on a thinly veiled accusation.他的一番话，几乎是只蒙上一层薄薄面纱的指责。
• The way the police treat us verges on the criminal.警察那样对待我们，简直是犯罪。
• The situation verged on the catastrophic.局势接近于一场灾难。
• The food verged on the inedible.食品几乎到了不能食用的地步。
• Much of the US media's reaction to France and Germany's intransigence on the Iraqi war issue has verged on the xenophobic. (Now Europe, Feb. 27, 2003)对于法德两国在伊拉克战争问题上的不通融态度，美国媒体的反应，很大一部分几乎是民族排外狂的。

但是偶尔也有不带负面意义的。

• The scientific chatter, in a dim corner of the restaurant, often verged on the philosophical.在饭馆僻静的一个角落进行的学术交谈，往往几乎是哲学性的。
