Heritage xv. 136 In breast-work the digger stands facing the turf bank, and thrusts his spade horizontally, whereas in underfooting he stands on the bank and cuts vertically. 1957― Ir. Folk Ways xiv. 189 There are two methods of cutting, vertically or ‘underfooting’ and horizontally or ‘breasting’, and they tend to be used respectively on thin upland and deep lowland bogs. 1979Country Life 27 Sept. 963/3 In some areas the [peat] turf is cut horizontally, known as breasting, but most turf is cut vertically, which is termed ‘underfooting’.
