An œstrogenic hormone, C18H21(OH)3, which is one of the metabolic products of œstradiol and is produced in the placenta during pregnancy.
1933N. K. Adam et al. in Nature 5 Aug. 206/1 The full chemical names of two important derivatives..are 3,16,17-trihydroxy 1,3,5-œstratriene, and 3-hydroxy 17-keto 1,3,5-œstratriene. These names, though suitable for chemical literature, are cumbrous for general and biological use. We suggest as common names, for use where the chemical nature of the principle has been identified, ‘œstriol’ for the trihydroxy compound, and ‘œstrone’ for the keto-hydroxy compound. 1950L.
