tilloid Geol.|ˈtɪlɔɪd| [f. till n.2 + -oid.] A sedimentary rock which is similar in appearance to a tillite but is not known to be of glacial origin; a sedimentary rock composed of non-glacial deposits.
1931E. Blackwelder in Bull. Geol. Soc. Amer. XLII. 903 For these reasons the scarcity of striated stones in the McGee tilloid* need not be given undue weight. [Note] *Meaning a till-like deposit of doubtful origin. 1957F. J. Pettijohn Sedimentary Rocks (ed. 2) vi. 265 The non⁓glacial conglomeratic mudstones or tilloids vary from a chaotic unassorted assemblage of coarse materials set in a mudstone matrix to a mudstone with sparsely distributed cobbles. 1966Earth-Sci. Rev. II. 251 When there is any doubt about the origin of a till-like deposit, we encourage the use of tilloid, as a non-genetic term. 1977[see tillite]. |
