Have you everheard of DDT? DDT is a pesticide.
In 1874, auniversity of Austrian chemistry student synthesized DDT, but people didn'tfind it useful. In 1939, Swiss chemist Paul Hermann Muller discovered that DDTcan kill mosquitoes, lice and crop pests quickly and is safer than otherpesticides. During the Second World War and after the war, DDT has played animportant role in preventing agricultural diseases and insect pests, andreducing disease damage. Muller wasawarded the Nobel Prize in 1948.
However, DDT wasfound to cause thinning of the egg shells and some eggs can't hatch. In 1962,Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" was published, arousing people'sawareness of the environment and drawing public attention to environmentalissues. Since the 1970s, DDT has been banned from being used by over 86countries, but still in some developing countries it is used to kill mosquitoes. The World Health Organization announced the reopening of DDT in 2002 for thecontrol of mosquito-borne diseases. This practice is still controversial sofar.
In my opinion, only by correctly understanding the nature of matter can we make rational useof it. Whilekilling pests and diseases, DDT also brings pollution to the environment and harms human health.I, like Rachel Carson, am also hoping the environment will be better. Man mustrespect nature, protect nature, and learn to live in harmony with nature.
