[a. Fr., lit. ‘(sleeping) head to foot’, f. tête head + bêche, reduced from béchevet, lit. ‘double bedhead’.]
(A stamp) printed upside down relative to the next stamp in the same row or column (see quot. 1913). Freq. attrib. in phr. tête-bêche pair. Also as adv.
1874Stamp-Collector's Mag. XII. 10 The Marquis de L― has kindly forwarded for notice a reversed 4 centime laureated French empire stamp; technically termed a tête-bêche. 1882E. B. Evans Catal. Some of the stamps of Grenada were printed with alternate rows reversed, so that the stamps in one row were tête-bêche with reference to those in the next.
