A thread-worm of the genus Strongylus (or the family Strongylidæ, of which this is the type), common as a disease-producing parasite in various animals.

[ad. Gr. στρογγύλη fem. (agreeing with ῥάβδος rhabdus) of στρογγύλος round.]
A sponge-spicule of the rhabdus type, rounded at both ends. Hence ˈstrongylate, ˈstrongylote adjs., having the shape of a strongyle.
