A complex polysaccharide obtained from the mould Penicillium stoloniferum, now known to contain a fungal virus which is an antiviral agent, stimulating the release of interferon.
1961Probst & Kleinschmidt in Federation Proc. XX. 441/2 A fermentation broth of Pen. stoloniferium [sic] prophylactically inhibits a number of viruses both in animals and in tissue culture... The active principle, designated as statolon, has been subjected to a variety of purification procedures. 1964Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci.
