a) “自己不用而腾出来”。

• Could you spare your dictionary for a moment?您的词典能借给我用一会儿吗？
• We would like to help you out, but we can't spare the staff.我们本来很愿意帮你，但是人手腾不出来。

b) 加上间接宾语（不用 to，放在直接宾语之前），表示“腾出什么来给与某人”。

• Can you spare me fifty dollars?你能借给我五十美元吗？
• He spared us an hour from his busy schedule.他从排得满满的日程中抽出了一小时给我们。

c) “名词 + to spare”中的 to spare 其实意义相当于形容词 spare，但不是有意备用的。

• There's food to spare.有多余的粮食。
• Have you got a few minutes to spare?你能抽出几分钟的空吗？
• We arrived at the station with half an hour to spare.我们提早半小时来到了车站。
• —Is there enough? —Yes, enough and to spare. —够吗？—够，还绰绰有余。a spare tire 是有意准备好的备用轮胎，a tire to spare是临时多出的一个轮胎。

a) “省下来”、“不投入使用”（往往采取直接宾语前面加 no 的否定形式）。

• spare no effort不遗余力
• spare no expense不惜工本。

b) 直接宾语是人或人的切身利害，spare 是“放过”、“饶了”的意思（也是第四类动词）。

• Everyone prayed that Allah might spare the village from starvation.人人都祈求安拉让全村人不要饿死。
• The great cities had not been spared.大城市未能免祸。
• The epidemic spared no one.流行病无人幸免。
• We should spare her feelings.我们应该避免伤害她的感情。

c) 间接宾语是人（放在直接宾语之前，无 to），直接宾语是不好的事，spare somebody something 是“让某人免遭到某事”（第四类动词）。

• I'm only trying to spare you the bother of having to do it again.我只是设法让你不必麻烦再做一遍。
• Spare me the details.细节别跟我细说了。
• His intervention may have spared me a bloody nose.他的干预，说不定让我避免了被打得鼻青脸肿。

可以采取被动语态，将间接宾语变为主语。

• I was spared the shame of everybody knowing.事情没有公之于众，我总算没有丢人。
