One of a breed of sheep, developed in New Zealand by crossing Suffolk and Southdown sheep and used to produce lean meat and short, fine wool. Also attrib.

Feb. 144/3 Two instances of fresh development with sheep breeds may be mentioned: First, the aim of some breeders in the South Island ‘..to establish a new breed by crossing Suffolk and Southdown with a view to producing a sheep having Southdown characteristics with a maximum of lean meat’—the South Suffolk.1956G.
