1) 用于否定句，加重语气，表示（没有）任何人。

• One could gaze far into the distance and often not see a single soul.放眼远眺，往往见不到一个人影。
• I swear I'll never tell a soul.我发誓决不告诉任何人。

2) 虽然不是否定句，但表示“罕见”、“万一”。

• ... any curious soul who ventured too close and accidentally slipped in would be in dire jeopardy. (Dan Brown, Deception Point, p.128)…万一有谁好奇，胆敢走得太近，不小心滑了进去，就会大吃苦头。

3) 用于表示某地有多少人口（这与俄国果戈理小说《死魂灵》中的“魂灵”用法相似）。

• this vast country of 200 million souls这个两亿人口的大国。
• Now, one day in Oct.—after an interval of just 39 years—America will claim more than 300 million souls. (US News & World Report, Oct. 2, 2006, p.48)现在，到十月的某一天，仅仅三十九年的间隔，美国将有三亿以上人口。
