1) no sooner... than...是“一…就…”，前面的“…”部分，是个倒装句（谓语动词常为完成时，have 或 had 放主语之前）；后面的“…”部分，是个正常词序句；主从句的谓语动词都是瞬时动作的第四类动词（意思是：“前一事的发生，并不比后一事的发生早”，但是主要的新信息是后一事）。

• No sooner had I sat down than the phone rang again.我刚坐下，电话铃又响了。

前一部分的主语，也可以提前到 no sooner 之前。

• You no sooner pour your aperitif than the bell goes.刚倒下开胃酒，铃就响。
• He had no sooner given his name than the Frenchman recognized it.他一说出自己的姓名，那个法国人马上就认出来了。

在惯用成语中，两部分也可以只剩下动词过去分词。

• No sooner said than done.说到就做到了。

2) sooner 还可以不表示时间上的先后而表示主观上的取舍。

• I'd sooner be dead than trapped in this hellhole.我宁可死也不愿意困在这个鬼地方。
• Sooner than go against her principles, she handed in her notice.她宁可提交了辞职书，也不肯违背自己的原则。
• Would you sooner I call back tomorrow?您要不要我明天回电话？
