Any compound having a molecular structure consisting of a chain of alternate silicon and oxygen atoms, the silicon atoms being bonded to hydrogen atoms or to organic radicals. Cf. silicone 2 a. Freq. attrib.
1917Jrnl. Chem. Soc. CXII. ii. 204 Perhaps the greatest confusion in the nomenclature of silicon compounds is to be found in the case of substances containing the {b1}Si{b1}O{b1}Si{b1} system. It is proposed to call the parent hydrogen compounds of this type ‘siloxanes’, and to specify the number of silicon and oxygen atoms in such terms as ‘disiloxane’, ‘disildioxane’, etc. 1941Jrnl.
