1897C. T. Davis Manuf. Leather (ed. 2) 623 In the making of ‘sig’ stains, blacks and pastes for leather, borax is the currier's friend. 1900H. C. Standage Leather Worker's Manual iv. 69 Seasoning for Oil-Grain Leathers—This is sometimes called ‘sig’. It is a fluid which is put onto the skin, so as to dye or stain it, or otherwise prepare it for being blackened on the grain side. 1903L. A. Flemming Pract.
