Also sidhe and (sing.) Sidh.
[Ellipsis (not found in Irish) of Ir. (aos) sídhe people of the fairy mound: cf. folk of peace s.v. folk 3 c and banshee.]
The hills of the fairies; fairyland, faerie. Hence (esp. in the writings of W. B. Yeats), the fairy folk, fairies, freq. regarded as the mythical gods of ancient Ireland. Cf. sheogue.
