An athletic contest in which a shot (shot n.1 14c) is propelled as far as possible from a starting position in a hand tucked between shoulder and neck, the force for the throw being generated mainly by the swing of the body; the action or an instance of propelling the shot in this way. Also: the shot itself. Cf. put v. 4a.
