Any of several cultivated varieties of the east Asian annual herb Perilla frutescens (family Lamiaceae (Labiatae)), esp. P. frutescens var. crispa, which has aromatic green or purple leaves used in Japanese cookery, esp. as a garnish with sashimi. Also called beefsteak plant, perilla.
