[a. L. septuāgēsima (sc. diēs) fem. of septuāgēsimus seventieth, f. septuāgintā seventy; in early use through OF. septuages(i)me.
It has been conjectured that the analogy of the names Quadragesima and Quinquagesima suggested the unmeaning application of Sexagesima and Septuagesima to the two preceding Sundays. Another (less likely) conjecture is that Septuagesima means ‘the seventieth day’ before the octave of Easter. Both conjectures are in Alcuin (8th c.).]
