The laying-on of hands by which a rabbi is ordained; the ordination of a rabbi. Also, a diploma of rabbinical ordination.
The laying-on of hands, practised only in antiquity, was later replaced by a proclamation (also called semicha).

VIII. 70/1 Out of the number of the regular disciples (Talmidim) were chosen the Chaberim (Colleagues), who, again, were elected to the dignity of a rabbi by the ‘Semichah’, or imposition of hands by three members of the Sanhedrim. 1914J.
