seismometer|saɪzˈmɒmɪtə(r)| [f. seismo- + -meter.] An instrument for measuring the intensity, direction, and duration of earthquakes. All practical seismometers now record their observations automatically, hence the name is used almost interchangeably with seismograph (q.v.).
