[A use of Sc. sclaff ‘to strike with the open hand or with anything having a flat surface’, ‘to walk in a clumsy way without properly lifting the feet, to shuffle along’. Prob. of onomatopœic origin; cf. sclaff n., ‘the noise made by a slight blow’ or ‘in shuffling the feet’ (E.D.D.).]

b. trans. To scrape (the ground) behind the ball in striking; also, to hit (a ball) after having scraped the ground with the club. Hence sclaffed ppl. a., ˈsclaffing vbl. n.
