The name of H. G. F. Schröder (1810–85), German mathematician and physicist, used attrib. and in the possessive to designate an optical illusion described by him (see Ann. der Physik und Chem. (1858) CV. 307), in the form of a line drawing of a staircase drawn without convergence of receding parallel lines, so that one appears successively to look down at the top and up at the underside of the staircase as the perspective reverses.
