Also (erron.) Rinné.
The name of Heinrich Adolf Rinne (1819–68), German otologist, who described a form of the test in 1855 (Vierteljahrschr. f. d. prakt. Heilkunde XLV. 72), used in the possessive, attrib., and absol. to designate a diagnostic test for deafness (see quot. 1883).

Ear 693 Rinne's experiment..consists in setting a tuning-fork..on the vertex or on the mastoid process, and allowing it to vibrate till the note is no longer heard; the prongs of the fork are then brought close to the ear, and in normal circumstances the tone will be heard again (positive experiment). 1899G.
