Paper 201/1 Ricing, a term applied, chiefly in esparto mills, to the mottled or grainy look-through due to ‘crowding’ or crushing..; in Scotland also referred to as ‘rawny’ (Sc. rawns, the roe of fish). It is generally used when the paper shows characteristic small knots due to the stuff being too wet beaten, and having too much rubbing in the machine chests. 1963R. R. A. Higham Handbk.
