Any of a number of membrane proteins involved in binding ribosomes to the rough endoplasmic reticulum during protein synthesis.
1978G. Kreibich in Jrnl. Cell Biol. LXXVII. 465/2 These proteins, which were designated ribophorins, were isolated together with the bound polysomes.1980Nature 31 Jan. 436/1 Two additional membrane proteins have been observed in the ribosome-bearing fraction of the endoplasmic reticulum in animal cells and have been termed ‘ribophorins’.1984Holtzman & Novikoff Cells & Organelles (ed. 3) ii. iv. 146 According to one hypothesis, two of the proteins (‘ribophorins’) serve as receptor sites that help to bind the ribosomes.
