[ad. G. rhynchokinetik (H. Hofer 1949, in Acta Zool. XXX. 213), f. Gr. ῥύγχο-ς beak, snout + κινητικ-ός moving: see kinetic a. (n.) and kinesis.]
A process, found in some birds and lizards, by which the upper bill or jaw may be raised relative to the cranium by extensive bending of nasal and premaxillary bones.
1963W. J. Bock in C. G. Sibley Proc. XIII Internat. Ornithol. Congr. I. 46 Hofer showed that rhynchokinesis is correlated with a schizorhinal nostril. 1964Jrnl. Morphol. Burton Feeding & Feeding Apparatus in Waders ii. 33 Two principal modifications are found in present day birds. These are prokinesis, in which the upper jaw moves about a pivot formed by a narrow strip of flexible bone at the fronto-nasal hinge; and rhynchokinesis, in which bending occurs over a wider zone, some distance along the bill. Rhynchokinesis involves a change in bill shape.
