‖ raphis Bot.|ˈreɪfɪs| Also rha-. Pl. raphides |ˈræfɪdiːz|. [Gr. ῥαϕίς, ῥαϕιδ- needle.] One of the minute crystals, usually of acicular form, found in the cells of many plants. The name was suggested by De Candolle (1826). The sing. is rarely used, and raphides may sometimes be intended as pl. of raphide.
