A crevasse between the head of a glacier and a surrounding rock wall.
1934C. F. Meade in S. Spencer Mountaineering vi. 122 Another sort of chasm closely related to the bergschrund is the randkluft. This is the name given to the gap between the glacier and the bare rock-wall of a peak.1958Polar Record IX. 91 Bergschrund, the crevasse which occurs at the head of a cirque or valley glacier and which separates the moving glacier ice from the rock wall and the ice apron attached to it. When the ice apron is absent the gap is known as a Randkluft.1970R. J. Small Study of Landforms xi. 380 Temperature changes such as these seem insufficient to cause powerful shattering of the rock, and in any case they are presumably still less pronounced in the crack (‘randkluft’) between the névé and the headwall.
