A fossil anthropoid ape, sometimes considered a hominid, belonging to the genus so called and known from remains found in northern India and East Africa. So ramaˈpithecine n. and a., a fossil anthropoid closely related to Ramapithecus; pertaining to or resembling an anthropoid ape of this kind.
1934Discovery July 197/2 The other [ape], Ramapithecus, is represented by an upper jaw in which the teeth are set in a rounded V, approaching the human form, instead of the U-shape characteristic of the anthropoids. 1965Folia Primatologica III. 90 No finds of Ramapithecus or any other dryopithecine or hominid have ever been made in the Tatrot or Pinjor zones. 1968D.
