1. (orig. Thieves' slang.) Arranged or concocted beforehand, as a burglary, by conspiracy with other persons, as servants in the house; preconcerted, planned in an underhand manner: see put v.1 56 t. Often in phr. a put-up job. Also absol. as n.
1810Ann. Reg. 296 The police officers are of opinion, that the robbery of the above cathedral is what is called, in the slang language, a put-up robbery. 1838Dickens O.
