pustulan, n. Biochem.|ˈpʌstjʊlæn| [f. *pustulin n. + -an I. 2.] A glucan, originally isolated from the lichen Umbilicaria pustulata, and present in various other lichens.
1953Whistler & Smart Polysaccharide Chem. xviii. 338 Pustulan, a polysaccharide isolated from the large lichen Umbilicaria, differs from lichenan in that it possesses β-1,6′ linkages and a specific optical rotation of -44°. 1965Jrnl. Bacteriol. XC. 1019 Changes in activity of β-1,3-glucanase (with laminarin as substrate) and β-1,6-glucanase (with pustulan as substrate) have been measured during the conjugation process, in addition to changes in the activity of several control enzymes which would not be expected to be related to the conjugation process. 1977Jrnl. Microscopy CXI. 145 The diffraction data obtained for crystals of pustulan with the ‘frozen hydrated’ electron diffraction technique are the first crystallographic data obtained for this polysaccharide. 1985Jrnl. Immunol. CXXXIV. 2593/1 Despite their different linkages and chain structures, β-glucans from yeast (present in yeast mannan), barley, algae (laminarin), and two different fungi (pachyman and pustulan) inhibited monocyte ingestion of Er [sc. rabbit erythrocytes] and/or zymosan particles. |
