[Etymology unascertained; possibly = F. burelle, a barry stripe or barulet, in Heraldry.]
A transverse stripe, or bar, made by one or several coloured weft threads, in a web of cloth (cf. list n.3 4); ordered by Act 35 Eliz. c. 10 to be woven at the beginning and end of a piece, as evidence of its full length, and to prevent its subsequent fraudulent shortening.
