Improperly propodeum.
[mod.L. (Newman) f. Gr. πρό, pro-² + ποδεών (-ῶνος) the neck or mouth of a wineskin, or of the bladder; hence, any narrow end.
(The Latinized form in -podeum was app. founded on the misconception that the Gr. word is a neuter in -ον.)]
That part of the thorax, principally in Hymenoptera, which precedes and partly surrounds the petiole; originally the first abdominal segment.
