A female steroid sex hormone, C₂₁H₃₀O₂, which is secreted by the corpus luteum and also made synthetically, and is responsible for the cyclical changes in the uterus in the latter part of the menstrual cycle and also necessary for the maintenance of pregnancy. Also attrib. and Comb.
