这个介词词组，同介词 before 大致同义，指时间上的“先于”。不过 prior to 多用于书面或其他较为正式的场合。由于大致同义，所以许多人认为 prior to 是个多余的累赘。但是，prior to 也有 before 所没有的更深一层的含义，就是：这个“先于”不单是时间上的偶然先后，而是前后两件事态彼此有内在的关系。

• He arrived before (*prior to) the accident.他是事故发生之前到达的。

反过来，先后两件事态有内在联系，尽管最好用 prior to，但是用 before 也可以。
