1. A customary allowance formerly made by the shipper to the master and crew of a vessel for the loading and care of the cargo; also called hat-money; subsequently merely a percentage addition to the freight, paid to the owners or freighters of the vessel.

2. A small duty formerly paid to a local society of pilots, as at Newcastle-on-Tyne. Also attrib.
